FOHLC Top 10 finalist for international honor

Kiambu County CBO Gets international Recognition.

Fountain of Hope Youth Initiative Top 10 finalist for international honor

Fountain of Hope Youth Initiative (FOHYI) was recently selected as one of the top 10 finalists for the 2010 Out of the Box Prize, honoring “innovative approaches to promoting community health and development worldwide.”

The first prize winner will be awarded $5,000 and a free customized WorkStation; the second prize winner will receive $2,000 and a WorkStation.

Fountain of hope Youth Initiative is a charitable organization founded by youths from diverse ethinic backgrounds and mixed gender in Kiambu county. FOHYI was founded in 2003 and is registred by Kenyan government under Ministry of Gender, Culture & Social Services  as a Community Based Organization.  Fountain of hope gives psychosocial support to orphans, widows, people living with HIV/Aids and the poor. FOHYI is active in the campaign against further spread of new HIV/Aids infections as well as fighting for the rights of vulnerable persons in the society. FOHYI is planing to upgrade to a national NGO in the near future and operate under the name of Fountain of Hope & Life Global.

The nine other finalists were chosen from among 309 applicants from 42 countries. Fellow finalists include one other from the Kenya – Called Uhuru Child from Rift Valley, – three from USA,  two from India, one from the Philippines, one from Malawi, and one worldwide initiative.

Out of the Box is sponsored by Community Toolbox, an organization based in Lawrence, Kan., that provides resources for community-building groups around the world.

“We were deeply moved by the stories we received from around the world,” said Christina Holt, associate director for Community Tool Box Services. “It is evident that there is an abundance of good work being done to improve community health and well-being of needy children and the poor  (in Kiambu County). Members of this initiative should be extraordinarily proud of their efforts.”

Sanitary Towels Project to Girls Orphaned by AIDS/Girls in Extreme Poverty & Education Support to Children Infected/Affected by HIV/AIDS is a program of Fountain of Hope Youth Initiative (FOHYI). James N. Waruiru, project director, expressed deep gratitude to Community Toolbox for their recognition.

“The Out of the Box Award is an opportunity for FOHYI to share its success story with the world,” James said. “It highlights the fact that we have done excellent work from a very humble beggining with very minute resources’”.

He attributes the success of the initiative to the dedication of its small team of  members who generously volunteer their time and efforts to foster quality life to the needy especially children affected by HIV/Aids.  FOHYI also gives credits to its success to its primary donor Joup & Jitske Van Bigbergen thorough their Owili Project- Nertherlands and the government agencies especially though the office of District Commissioner Kiambu East and special recognitions goes to Mr. Kimathi the DC Kiambu East.

The sad news is Jitske Van Bigsbergen – Brouwer who was doing all fundraising can not join FOH celebrating the success because she died of cancer on 1st December and now tha fate of the project hangs in the air. FOH is optimistic new wellwishers will come on board to rescue the project.

“Our organization values people from diverse backgrounds, working to create an open atmosphere of trust, honesty and respect. Harassment or discrimination of any kind – including that involving tribe, race, color, religion, gender, age, national origin, citizenship, disabilities, or any other similarly protected status – is unacceptable,”

” FOHYI strives to fulfil God’s instructions as written in Holy Bible James 1:27,  Pure and undefiled religion before* God the Father* is this: to care for orphans and widows in their misfortune and to keep oneself unstained by the world’’ Said James.

People are encouraged to go online and vote for the initiative between now and Jan. 31.  To do so, and to read the submission on behalf of the FOHYI, go to: . http://ctb.ku.edu/en/out_of_the_box/finalists/finalist9.aspx
